Ingredients

  • 1 bottle 750ml of red wine (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, or Zinfandel recommended)
  • 2 cups of apple cider or orange juice optional for added sweetness
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar or honey adjust to taste
  • 1 orange sliced into rounds
  • 1 lemon sliced into rounds
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 5-6 whole cloves
  • 2-3 whole star anise
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract optional
  • 1/4 cup brandy or rum optional, for added depth
  • Garnish: Fresh orange slices cinnamon sticks, or star anise

Instructions

  • Prepare the Base: Pour the bottle of red wine into a large saucepan or pot. Add the apple cider or orange juice if using.
  • Add the Sweetener and Spices: Stir in sugar or honey until dissolved. Add the orange and lemon slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise.
  • Simmer the Wine: Heat the mixture over medium heat until it begins to steam. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer gently for 15-20 minutes. Do not let it boil, as boiling will cook off the alcohol.
  • Add the Final Touches: Stir in the vanilla extract and brandy or rum (if desired) during the last 5 minutes of cooking.
  • Strain and Serve: Strain the mulled wine into mugs or heatproof glasses, discarding the spices and citrus. Garnish with a fresh orange slice, a cinnamon stick, or star anise.

Notes

  • Wine Choice: Use a dry, full-bodied red wine for the best results. Avoid overly expensive wines, as the spices and citrus will dominate the flavor.
  • Make It Non-Alcoholic: Substitute red wine with grape juice or pomegranate juice for a family-friendly version.
  • Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently before serving.
This Mulled Wine Recipe is perfect for cozying up by the fire or sharing at holiday gatherings. Its aromatic spices and warming citrus notes make it a must-try seasonal classic!
